GENOTOXICOLOGICAL EVALUATION OF A BREWERY EFFLUENT IN BENIN CITY ON ALLIUM CEPA DNA USING THE RAPD TECHNIQUE

Industrial activities in breweries generate large quantities of wastewater, which if not properly treated, could pollute the receiving water bodies. In this study, Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) technique was used to assess integrity Allium cepa L. roots exposed varying concentrations [1, 5 and 10% (v/v)] a ?treated? effluent from brewery plant Benin City. polymorphism discernable by changes RAPD profiles as variation intensity, disappearance old appearance new bands compared control. A total 89 were detected 64 (71.9%) these fragments polymorphic. The loss gain increased with concentration effluent. Physicochemical analysis wastewater showed that BOD, nitrates, phosphates conductivity present at amounts higher than limits set national (NESREA) international (USEPA) for discharge. Data obtained study imply current treatment given is insufficient guarantee minimal risks on genotoxic effects living cells associated its discharge into environment.
